University of Tennessee Health Science Center: College of Pharmacy

Employees of TRO Jung|Brannen’s Memphis office, now brg3s, teamed with ETFC in a large joint venture project to consolidate pharmacy school operations into a single structure on the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) campus. Adjacent to the Memphis Medical District and the planned UT/Baptist Research Park, the College of Pharmacy stands as a link between all entities. This new center will provide the UTHSC with the opportunity not only to strive toward providing the best pharmacy education available, but also to undertake innovative research and embrace new technology.

The design concept consists of two wings separated by an atrium with the east wing housing the main laboratory functions and the west wing devoted to administrative activities. The atrium features a large glass skylight, allowing even the interior-facing spaces access to natural light. The two wings are connected by a monumental stairway leading through the center of the atrium. In addition, student collaboration spaces are used as connectors at each end of the atrium, adding additional day lighting opportunities through large glass curtain walls running the height of the building. The exterior character of the building is consistent with the general image and style of the research park and the UTHSC campus. Given the tight site requirements, the college reaches six stories, easily respecting the scale of the adjacent buildings.
